Margie Olds

PhD, Physical Therapist, Specialized in the Shoulder

Biography

Margie Olds is a Specialist Shoulder Physiotherapist based in Auckland, where she leads the physiotherapy team at the Auckland Shoulder Clinic. With extensive experience in elite sport, she previously worked in the United Kingdom as Lead Therapist for British Canoeing and continues to consult with athletes from a wide range of sports presenting with shoulder-related conditions.

She completed her PhD in 2019, investigating predictors of recurrent shoulder instability. As part of this work, she developed the PRIS (Predicting Recurrent Instability of the Shoulder) tool, which helps estimate the risk of recurrent instability following a first-time traumatic shoulder dislocation. Her master’s research focused on tissue stiffness in individuals with unilateral shoulder instability.

Alongside her clinical practice, Margie is actively involved in education, research, and innovation in shoulder rehabilitation. She delivers postgraduate education for physiotherapists and healthcare professionals, contributes to the development of shoulder bracing solutions through Flawless Motion, and leads several ongoing research initiatives. Her work includes the development of the SARTS (Shoulder Athletic Return to Sport) tests, undertaken in collaboration with Tim Uhl and colleagues during a research fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Through her clinical, educational, and research activities, she is committed to advancing the assessment, management, and return-to-sport outcomes of individuals with shoulder injuries.
