Tool content

Objective

The VISA-G (Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment-Gluteal) is a measurement tool used to assess factors such as pain and functional limitations in patients with greater trochanteric pain syndrome (Fearon et al., 2015).

Interpretation

A maximum score of 100 points represents an asymptomatic patient. The lower the score, the greater the impact of lateral hip pain on the patient’s life (Fearon et al., 2015).

Execution

This scale consists of 8 items: one question using the Visual Analog Scale (0 = no pain and 10 = worst pain), four pain-related questions (questions 2, 3, 4, and 6), one question regarding difficulty moving after prolonged sitting (question 5), and two activity-related questions (questions 7 and 8). The first seven questions are scored on a scale of 0 to 10, and question 8 has a maximum score of 30, for a total score of 100 points (Fearon et al., 2015).

Duration

5–10 minutes.

Equipment

None.

Clinical Value

The VISA-G is a reliable and valid score for measuring the severity of disability associated with gluteal tendinopathy and for evaluating treatment efficacy (Fearon et al., 2015).

A change of more than 4 points represents a true change in the VISA-G (Korakakis et al., 2021).
